BueLingo True, BueLingo don't have the beautiful curly horns, nor the spotted, speckled hides, yet they have their own special distinction which catches the eye. Each year BueLingo breeding stock and semen is available for those desiring to start a herd. Give us a call for the best BueLingo beef cattle
Fall Cattle To Sell
Weaning time at DCCI is October 10th - November 5th. Although Fall is a perfect time to take delivery of cattle many folks make selections prior to weaning. They select calves still at their mother's side, pay a deposit fee and receive them after they have had all the preventative shots at weaning. People who like a big selection come to DCCI. Here's what will be for sale and ready to ship at weaning time.
140 registered Texas Longhorn heifers. (83 as of 1-1-02) (Many sired by over 60" sires) 20 registered Texas Longhorn herd sire prospects. 160 purebred Longhorn feeder steers for the lean meat industry. (22 as of 1-1-02) 22 bred Longhorn cows ages 16 and older, (excellent producers) that need a special home with winter shelter. (4 as of 1-1-02) 54 bred Longhorn 2000 heifers. (18 as of 1-1-02) 3 Senior AI herd sires. (2 as of 1-1-02) 33 bred Longhorn cows. (72 as of 1-1-02) 12 BueLingo bred cows ages 10 and over. (7 as of 1-1-02) 41 BueLingo weanling heifers. (17 as of 1-1-02) 4 BueLingo adult sires. (All Sold Out) 65 BueLingo feeder steers. (All Sold Out) If you like to make "super market" selections with lots of choices of high quality cattle, reserve (with a partial deposit) one or a truck load well in advance of weaning. This is not a dispersal, just the regular Autumn cattle numbers that will be sold prior to when the snow balls fly. Give us a call.
Future Profit Projections
by Darol Dickinson
How does this effect the cattle industry? Well, that is a prediction we all can make fairly easy. It is going to force more people to own fewer numbers of cattle on smaller acreage. How will people react as they switch to this down scaling in the cattle industry? Obviously people who choose to own and raise cattle will do it with smaller numbers. Here is my prediction; I predict the only logical thing is to produce a higher value of registered cattle. It makes a lot more sense to run a couple of $3000 cows on a 10 acre tract and give them the best of care, than to run $200 generic cattle and let them mow the grass. The $3000 cow has a chance of raising a $3000 calf, but the generic cow will only raise one more generic. The future cattle producers will be more convenience oriented. Breeds that require regular supervision will be replaced by breeds who calve unassisted. Breeds that are disease resistant and will sustain themselves while owners may work five days a week off the farm will become much more popular. People enjoy raising healthy, low maintenance cattle. Death, sickness, vet bills, and high maintenance is not at all acceptable or profitable. Therefore, take a long hard look at it, and you will agree that the strategic market place for the future of the cattle industry has to be in high quality attractive, eye catching, high dollar registered cattle. This is happening all over the nation and will increase annually. In my opinion, Texas Longhorn fit the future more correctly than any of the other 100 breeds. The future looks great for Texas Longhorns and those producing them.
Gizmo
The TLJ rated him first place Show Sire leading all other sires in average points of offspring from show winnings. Gizmo has been the "thickness" leader at DCCI for years. He is now available for purchase, not only semen, ($20) but the whole enchilada. He's an American original and a great one. For purchasing information, give us a yell at 740-758-5050.
New Policy
With this issue a scale down from 14,000 will begin. The frequency will go from every nine months to three or four times a year. Clients who have made any purchase within five years will stay on the mailing list. Others will be removed over the next few mailings. The policy of DCCI newsletters is to encourage readers to purchase from DCCI and also to present helpful, profit increasing articles. The DCCI editorial policy is free to tackle issues other publications would fear. Congratulations to you for remaining on the mailing list. We appreciate you most of all.

This tall black sire is out of George Gilman's great cow, Rula Ranger, who was Houston Stock Show All Age Champion Cow in 1992. At DCCI we are humble that successful programs like Mi Tierra select their sires here. Thank you Dr. Graham.
Powder River Classic Longhorn Squeeze Chutes - are the safest & easiest of all on the market when it comes to handling big horned cattle. Here are two reasons why; Horizontal side pipes allow wide horned cattle to smoothly move through the chute without hanging up on a parallel vertical. The really great thing on Powder River Longhorn Chutes is that cattle can go right on out the front after being worked. The psychology of cattle always going forward & being released trains cattle to load easier. A chute with a dead end front panel soon trains cattle not to want to be caught. Order your Powder River from DCCI for a competitive price on the best product of its kind.
Herd Sires are a big deal at DCCI. With one phone call, one or a dozen Longhorn or BueLingo bulls may be purchased. Year around 30 to 60 bulls are available to select from. Every bull is weighed, measured, genetically planned and eyeball approved. For the greatest selections available give us a call 740-758-5050. Colorful Watusi bulls are also available.
The 2002 Texas Longhorn Celebrity Calendar - is being printed and will be available November 1st. The calendar, open on the wall, is size 12" x 18" with 15 full color 9" x 12" famous Longhorn photos. Leading ranches in Canada and USA sponsor this 25th annual edition. Send $9 for one postage paid calendar. Discounts on multiple orders. Order from DCCI at 24001 Hwy. 94, Calhan, CO 80808. This one is a beaut!!

Producing For The Future
The registered cattle industry does not always rise and fall with the generic market, but sometimes they twirl a similar rope. The midyear cattle report of late July indicate producers are holding 2.1% fewer beef replacement heifers than last year. Liquidation of beef cattle numbers appear to continue a reduction trend of now nearly 13 years . This is the longest cycle of herd reductions in over 100 years. Today there are 40 million head less cattle than peak inventory of 1975. Less cattle obviously makes a statement. More people are eating more beef than years past. More land is becoming unavailable for grazing and the breeds are utilizing more browse foliage. The government has taken large acreage away from ranchers to make parks and wet lands. More deer and big game are consuming grass than ever before. Cattle that do well on grass grow economically, produce lean meat, and rapidly multiply will become more profitable than ever before with less numbers of inventory. Ranchers will raise less cattle and sell for higher prices. The future looks good for beef cattle and even better for registered quality stock no matter how you twirl the rope.
Sadie Sam
Sadie Sam is by Not Gunna and out of a Senator daughter who is out of a King daughter. Although Sadie Sam is not for sale, (thanks for all the calls about her) everyone can raise this quality by using the same bulls. Here at DCCI the policy is not to sell the great producing cows, but semen is available on the whole family. The Sadie Sam family can be created in every herd by using frozen semen from DCCI. Winchester ($20), Not Gunna ($20), Senator ($20), King ($15), and Gizmo ($20).
Scientific Cattle Breeding
The breeding of cattle on a world wide basis swings pendulum like from one extreme to the other. In 1880 Texas Longhorns were rounded up by the millions. Certain bulls were castrated & others were retained to breed the herd. If a bull calf was fleshy, muscular & appeared to be of a good quality, he was castrated to develop into a salable steer. If the bull was of low quality, poor doing or small he was left as a bull, later to be a herd sire. This early Texas practice, described in Dobie's book, "The Longhorns" (1939), was popular when the West was unfenced & millions of cattle reproduced with no economic thought of insurance, interest or taxes. The totally opposite example happened in Germany starting right after World War II. A country devastated by military destruction was ravaged by disease. People had TB & so did the cattle. Hoof & Mouth disease was only one of numerous problems with no CNN reporters present, or even caring. The German national cattle herds had been consumed by starving soldiers & surviving residents. Very few farm livestock remained. General George Marshall, under directives of Harry Truman, developed & implemented the "Marshall Plan" designed to use USA funds & leadership to rebuild Germany & the other European countries destroyed during the war. (The USA is the only world power that is attacked by a country, kicks butt, then returns to rebuild their country.) Heino Messerschmidt was the German under Secretary of Agriculture. At Neuestadt (new town) Aisch (name of river) the Besammungs (insemination) Verein (center) genetic program was developed. The superior genetics of Germany & Europe were pooled for early artificial insemination use. There was an all out program developed to eliminate disease transmitted by natural copulation, & provide the highest scientific proven genetics to poor & starving people. Semen was processed on beef cattle, draft cattle, milk cattle, milk goats, milk sheep & swine. At this time artificial insemination was not a frozen product, but hot. There were no plastic AI sleeves. Each mating was important - very important. Families were living on milk & meat. Disease could not be tolerated anymore. The war was over. Time to rebuild. Heino Messerschmidt was Cambridge educated. His job was to re-establish the German genetics, then develop them to be the greatest in the world. The mentality of the German people was to do whatever it took, pay whatever price it cost, & become the best. Every male admitted at Besammungs Verein was performance tested. Only one in thousands became a useable semen sire. It became a regulation that no one could own their own bull. No one swayed by personal feelings, sentimental love or even economics was allowed to own a male, or to breed to anything except government proven, tested males. All breedings were AI. A beef specialist individually inspected every cow & approved each mating with careful calculations. It was a regulation. (In Germany a regulation is as good as a law). World renown cattle scientist Jan Bosma of Pretoria, South Africa, was associated with Messerschmidt to develop the ultimate performance guidelines. He left no stone unturned to define the superior genetics. The Besammungs Verein stud farm made the world's fastest genetic advances. They have now been testing for over 50 years. (The Gelbveih breed is one result of their efforts.) It is now the world's largest semen center. The first calf born from frozen embryo technology was at Besammungs Verein. From a meek beginning, German farmers, with one to five cows, have developed sires of world renown quality. During Messerschmidt's lifetime, genetic improvement happened so fast semen & sires have been exported to North America and world-wide for herd improvement. Today the livestock quality in Germany is of world leadership vintage & superior to genetics from areas never touched by the ravages of war. What was the success formula? 1. Identify superior sires. 2. Performance test large numbers. 3. Do not allow natural service breeding to inferior untested bulls. 4. Do 100% AI with superior proven genetics. 5. Provide professional assistance for every mating. 6. Create genetics so superior the whole world wants them. At DCCI there are no government regulations to buy semen here. No professional government regulator will knock on your door to see if there is a cull bull with your cows. These are things you will have to enforce yourself. But ----- the result achieved by a serious postwar USA/German effort of rapid breed improvement, profitable production & serious quality control is available to everyone who will commit to the same success process. Today, just as it was in 1948 at Neuestadt Aisch, semen is available on the superior bulls, performance tested at DCCI, & it's not expensive. Shipments are ready to go world wide. DCCI has weighted & measured more beef type Texas Longhorn cattle than all the other breeders combined. DCCI BueLingo are equally so performance breed leaders. Call us if your goal is to promptly produce great genetics. Pleasant memories are planned and can be acheived, even from bombed-out beginnings.
Skulls
Longhorn polished skulls are a great addition to your home, steakhouse, church, terrorist training center, public school or ski lodge. For a list of skulls available with photos and start an authentic skull collection. Click Here.
Tour
A bus was designed like a spotted Longhorn cow complete with horns and tail. Daily, all summer and by group appointments in the fall, thousands saw and heard about the cattle, history and conservation. Tour narration gave details of breed history, healthy lean meat and local frontiers people. Tour attendees could purchase halves or vacu-wrapped lean Longhorn, jerky, and live cattle. Nearly a hundred Longhorn parts are available in the store as well as tools of the trade.
Trends, Projections & Preservation
Four beef packers control 79% of the meat market. Three of these also pack pork and control 57% of that market. Four companies control 42% of the USA turkey production. A handful of people control meat. They decide which breeds they want and demand no variables. As a result, numerous farm breeds are becoming obsolete unless they are the choice of the few. The United Nations' Food & Agriculture organization says one third of all domesticated breeds may disappear in the next 20 years. 740 breeds have disappeared during the past century. Livestock & poultry were once valued for their services; they controlled weeds, brush and insects, and gleaned gardens, field residue, orchards & range fiber not palatable by people. As they consumed these human uneatable fibers they created human consumable food (meats) without consuming food useable for humans. Two purposes of equal value resulted. Today's agriculture is industrialized to the point it values only the most productive of breeds & discards the others. High octane consumption is acceptable to acquire high octane output. This will change, but will livestock breeds known for browsing survive the corporate shake-down long enough to achieve their value acknowledgment? Even now, a growing number of "think tanks" are considering the sustainable, productive, and humane production breeds that are becoming known as "human friendly". (Not competing with people for the same foods.) Over 90% of the diet in modern turkey, chicken, pork and cattle feed lots could also be used for human consumption with slight preparation variations. Modern dairies consume major amounts of human consumable grains and use a major amount of the highest quality prepared hays. World food that is human consumable is never fed to livestock in most countries outside North America. Livestock breeds that can produce human food without consuming human food will become the hero of world nutrition. It's already a fact of life in most countries & will soon become a reality in the USA. Once a little know philosopher, Darol Dickinson said, "If everybody's doing it - it's probably wrong". Although some disagree, the crowd doesn't always stampede in the correct direction. The good news is, those who accurately project the future will prepare their livestock breeds to economically fit the need of future generations. Some old fashioned breeds will, in years to come, lead the way again. It is exciting that the Texas Longhorn breed is genetically ready to lead the way in human friendly food development as the USA turns to future high percentage browse food production. Today's niche minority breeds may become the leading human friendly breeds in the near future. The soon to be famous philosopher, Stan Searle, says "Success comes by finding a parade & getting in front of it". Many serious cattle producers project Texas Longhorn cattle to be that parade, and so do we.
