All cattle raised by DCCI proudly carry the Paint Brush D brand on the right rib. It's sort of a sanitary seal of approval. Each DCCI critter packs an ID number on the upper right hip. Right below the ID # is a year brand. 1999 is a "9". 2000 is a "0". It's easy for any cattle buyer to know at a glance every cow's age.
A brand is not a mark that is used thoughtlessly. Cattle branding is a system thousands of years old that has not ever been improved on to prevent theft and create a permanent identification.
