Sunny Jim Orr, Jr, riding Tender Boy by Bartender. Many of the trainers on the track, arena and show people would employ me to take photos of their whole barn of horses for the owner's promo. This was at Sunny Jim's Dad's arena, behind his house, in the edge of Pueblo, CO. Sunny Jim married Margaret Hammond Orr for a few years. They were a serious competitive team. Tender Boy was an AQHA Champion with a lot of performance points.
There are two kinds of trainers. One is the "horse whisper" type who kindly, slowly trains a horse to like to do things, then there are the "jockey" types who can train hard and ride a horse into their maximum result like a pony express run. There is a difference in hands.
This photo was used to illustrate action photography in the book "PHOTOGRAPHING HORSES" How to find the right angle, plan the action, light and trap the ultimate result.
