Tiger Leo was born 1958 by Leo and out of the TB mare Connie. Not many Leo sons were from TB mares so he was somewhat different than other Leo sons. He was the foundation heart of the Steyskal breeding program of Papillion, Nebraska. He almost single handedly took Stan and Mary Kay from the dairy business to a leading Quarter Horse success story. Each year since 1987 Steyskals have been listed on the AQHA Leading Breeders List. Tiger Leo was inducted into the NSBA Hall of Fame in 1995 because of his role as a great broodmare sire in the modern western pleasure industry. Tiger Leo was sire of earners of over 74 ROM's, 33 Superiors and 11 AQHA Champions.
Mary Kay called and ask me to do a day's photo shoot at their Nebraska breeding and training facility. It was rolling hill country, lots of corn fields and out in the country where they could own some space. I think it was in the late sixties that this photo of Tiger Leo was taken. It was the shot selected by Steyskals for post cards. I started carrying a Fitted halter with me in 1970 and it was not in use on this photo -- had to be sixties.
I photographed a lot of horses there. Tiger Hank was an impressive Tiger Leo son.
I recall Mary Kan and Stan as very hard working, dedicated performance horse people. They had a big training arena and a lot of clients had been developed by the Steyskal machine. The number of champions Steyskals cranked out was amazing. It showed work, persistence, not necessarily oil money or big start up bucks. They did it with sweat and blood -- Tiger Leo's and their own.
