We were saddened, but not surprised to hear of the passing of Don Limb yesterday.
Don authored the detailed "Real Butler Story" and unknown to most, authored the flight procedures for space shuttles from the Houston Space Center for 13 years. If there was a problem between here and the moon, astronauts quickly read the procedures that documented how to correctly deal with any or all technical problems. Don had one of the highest IQs at the Space Center. He had over 300 engineers under his authority, him being one of the few with only a high school diploma.
Don served in several national and affiliate positions both ITLA and TLBAA. He raised Butler family cattle with his wife Susan and their daughter.
Don had scheduled a visit to Dickinson Cattle Co Inc for the Summer of 2011 with his close friend George Wilhite. His declining health did not allow this planned trip. He did visit several other TL ranches, mostly in Texas, during his last months with great joy.
After it was obvious he was not strong enough to come to Ohio, Linda and I drove to Washington, Texas and had one last cherished visit with Don and Susan on Oct 24. Don was on his front porch waiting when we arrived. The Limb ranch house was immaculate. We talked about great cattle, the Texas drought, funny people, and about Heaven.
As Linda and I started out the Limb ranch driveway, I took two last shots of Don and Susan. Don and I knew this would be our last waves --- and I personally share them with you.
PS ~~ wait a week or so and call Susan at 936 878 2988. She has a few of Don's favorite Texas Longhorn cows that will be for sale at a reasonable price.
