Historic Consistent Horn

DCC Ranch e-News #341 - 1-13-24

by Darol Dickinson

I was excited in 1972 to measure my first over 40" bull. In 1977 I measured my first 60" bull, then 70" and on and on. Then 100" came on 3-22-2019. It really tells a story when anything reaches 90 and a few just keep going. Each of these data points tell their own story. Each gives a point of projection for possible consistency.

The www.arrowheadcattlecompany.com site is a wealth of data with every "factoid" and list one could dream of. The analytical mind of Craig Perez never ends as it is zeroed in on every squeek of horn info. Arrowhead is the gold standard of Texas Longhorn horn data. No association had the budget to accumulate this much horn data, nor ever will. Arrowhead isn't perfect--many great cattle were never measured, cattle died, cattle were not entered in the measuring events, and even today some people don't send their data to Arrowhead for competition.

Keep in mind Arrowhead is about horns. There is no data on weights, special value-colors, soundness, correct conformation or fertility. Of the multi-factor value considerations of this breed, Arrowhead hammers only the horn, but really does well calculate horn dead-on.

The Arrowhead data below is a gathering of bulls and cows measuring over 70", 80", 90" and 100." The accumulation is very telling for those serious about identifying horn development and where these genetics come from. These are leading sires for consistent progeny looking at a lifetime accumulation. These first ever calculations show from Arrowhead data the percentage of points of horn achievement on the leading sires.

Clear Point was an honor to breed and raise. To have this DCC origin sire at the top of the consistency list has been the goal for 56 years.

Exciting to us at DCC, Clear Point has the highest percentage of over 70," 80," and 90," progeny of the great sires. Leading the 90" pack with 9.30% may not sound big, but consider thousands of bulls did not sire any, he is the best. Learn more on Clear Point at: https://www.texaslonghorn.com/link/?Clear_Point

Although the DCC sire Drop Box could not be the highest percentage on 90" progeny, he reluctantly took second place with 7.14% defeating all the other great bulls.

There is a lot of chat about consistency, which is of great market value. However, no matter the chat or who is chatting, this chart puts to rest the facts on today's most consistent sires with thousands of pieces of data behind the final numbers.

A lot of things can be learned from this chart. The exciting one to us at DCC is that the leading sires of consistency were raised here at Dickinson Cattle Co in the Appalachian Foothills of Ohio.

Soon to come--more amazing stuff on the great Texas Longhorn breed.
