Appreciation Day finished
DCC Ranch eNews #376 - 10-02-2024
It was a soft pleasant early Fall day in Ohio for the 57th Anniversary of Dickinson Cattle Co. All cattle buyers were invited to enjoy a special day just for them in appreciation of their support. And, a great day it was. If you attended you will spot yourself in the photos, and if not, you will wish you were here. Maybe next year?
On Friday evening the vintage Ohio pig roast begin with Larry Warner basting down a big pig all night.
Drop Box was removed from his cows to be on display in the DCC bull barn--one of only a few over a ton over 90" TL sires.
An assortment of mouser barn cats were captured and prepared to ship to Springfield, Ohio, yet attendees of the CAD rescued them.
Eric Householder, of Householder Livestock Protection spoke on the millions of dollars lost from government released predators that consume or kill food animals, and how to do herd protection.
Colton Courtney of Sherman, NY presented graphics and a fast course on Texas Longhorn Artificial Insemination.
ITLA President elect, Brad Westmoreland of Waxahachie, Texas spoke about the International Texas Longhorn Assn--plans for new affiliates, new programs and importance of membership.
Linda and Misty Dickinson did the serious paper work and there was a lot of that.
Everyone enjoyed shopping at the Longhorn Head To Tail store for all kinds of beef, taxidermy and Longhorn related products.
Ranch hands and volunteers help demonstrate bloodless castration. Every procedure of cattle handling should be done bloodless.
Chuck and Vicky Stanbery, who had worked with DCC in Colorado, came for the CAD and were great help with Kirk preparing the alligator fillets. Some say Florida alligator tastes like chicken, others say like sweetbreads. One guy from Wyoming said about half way between Spotted Owl and Muskrat. Anyway, none was left over.
Joel sliced the smoked brisket. Everyone had choices of great stuff.
Buns were filled with brisket and pig roasted, plus ranch beans and alligator. After checking it out everyone was invited for seconds of their favorites.
Keith Berkeley DVM, new ITLA director, and ITLA VP Elect, Joel Dickinson. Keith spoke about ITLA benefits.
It was no simple task for the DCC Blue Shirts. Preparing enough food for 250 hungry cattle people, having it all hot or cold at the right time--not easy.
Although the DCC pavilion was adequate for previous events an additional tent was added to comfortably accommodate the larger numbers.
Moving 250 people from the ranch pavilion to the working corrals was an issue until Kevin Whitehead showed up with an empty pot cattle semi. All loaded in the big trailer. Plenty of room for a "people herd" before loading his cattle.
Guests were off loaded in the regular cattle chute with no 'downers' or cripples coming off the truck.
Demonstrations continued at the DCC working facilities for branding, medications and tail bleeding.
Keir and Deen Albert, the Nebraska delegation, made selections of young cattle to purchase viewing from the DCC cat walk.
During other entertainment, the DCC tour buses moved through the Longhorn pastures with narrated educational excursions.
Part of the event was the purchase of semen for the spring breeding season. Several popular new bulls, Giver and Point Wish were first available.
As a beautiful Ohio day at DCC came to an end, trucks and trailers loaded up leaving the corrals empty. Thanks to all attending. It was our honor to provide this day for you. See you the last Saturday in September 2025.
