Big fancy horned steers of the TEXAS LONGHORN breed are getting very popular. Famous rapper Rick Ross just started a herd of steers. Billionaire, Bill Koch acquired 32 big steers. This trend is not new and it is not going away.
When the big herds were driven up the trails in 1880, J. Frank Dobie wrote, "Steers were up to 6 feet tip to tip and some over 20 years old." Well, it isn't 1880 and those numbers don't cut the mustard by today's standards. Today they aren't selling for $10 a head either.
Watch Me, age 7
Watch Me was the widest tip to tip, (T2T) steer at the 2026 Horn Showcase at 141.1875," and the triple crown bronze winner. He was exhibited by Diamond B Cattle Co of Amarillo, Texas. No other steer has achieved this measurement at this young age. (What will he measure at age 15?) He is sired by Clear Point out of a Cowboy Tuff Chex x Drag Iron cow.
Watch Me was also 2026 ITLA International All Age Grand Champion Non Halter Steer.
Noah, age 12
Noah was winner of the 2026 Horn Showcase triple crown bronze with a hefty 139.5" T2T. He is sired by Drag Iron out of a Shadowizm x Overwhelmer cow.
"TX," age 4
"TX" just won the 2026 ITLA International Grand Champion All Age Halter Steer measuring in with a T2T of 108 5/8." He is owned and exhibited by Larry and Heatherly Smith. "TX" is a son of Drop Box and projected to mature in the 135" T2T range.
At Dickinson Cattle Co (DCC) you have heard about several bulls raised measuring over 100" and a bunch of the widest horned cows ever, including Silent Iron (117.56") Now look at the sports model of the breed, the steers. The three steers above were all sired by DCC bulls Clear Point, Drag Iron, and Drop Box.
Many are trying to raise valuable herd sires. It may be time that a steer has more value than a herd sire? It takes a really good herd sire prospect to make a great steer. Consider using the DCC bulls proven to sire great high value exhibition steers. It will be more fun than you can shake a sack at.
